Church History

Cedar Cross Missionary Baptist Church in Kentucky was organized December 1, 1923, from an extended arm of Mt. Olivet Church.  It was the result of a revival meeting held Sept. 1903, at the old Gilead schoolhouse conducted by Bro. Haskell Easton and Bro. Earnest Eaton.  There were 26 charter members.

In 1984, Cedar Cross saw a need to spread the Gospel to Emporia, KS.  Bro. Gerald Cherry was pastor at the time, so in June 1984, Bro. Cherry, Eual Holder and Vauanita Gillmore made the first trip to Emporia to hold a service with the people who had expressed and interest to find a place to worship.  After renting space to meet, plans were made to travel to Kansas once each month to hold services.  Each year a revival was scheduled with many different ministers taking part in this effort.

When this work began only four adults and two children were in attendance.  They were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Glass and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Calvert and their children, Gene and Stacey.  As time passed Tom, Gene, and Stacey were saved due to this effort.  Later Tom and Lisa’s two boys Matthew and Michael, as well as Tom’s brother Rodney, were saved.

During this time, land was purchased and a building was built through the efforts of the congregation and the generosity of many different churches.  On September 23, 2000 a church was organized with 11 charter members.  Brother Lloyd Steinshouer was elected the first pastor.  After Brother Lloyd left Cedar Cross the Church had several visiting preachers including Brother Anthony Shade who helped fill the pulpit over the years.

On April 19, 2009 Cedar Cross Missionary Baptist Church voted during business meeting to call  Shawn Madsen of Indianapolis to be the second pastor of the church. After his ordination, he moved to Kansas and served as pastor until the fall of 2015. During his time at Cedar Cross several souls were saved including the three Madsen children Tyler, Aryanna, and Myles. In November of 2015 Brother Madsen returned with his family back to Indianapolis.

Cedar Cross again had several preaching brethren who faithfully filled the pulpit during the Church’s time without a pastor including Brother Andrew McKnight, Brother Ken Mallard, and Brother Lloyd Steinshouer. In December of 2016 the Church called Brother Lloyd Steinshouer to serve as pastor. In January 2017 he moved to Emporia with his wife, Donnna Steinshouer, and began serving as pastor of Cedar Cross for the second time.
